Special Programs

Spine Program
The spine program provides coordinated comprehensive care for children and adolescents with routine or complex spine disorders. Our expert team is known for its innovative treatment of scoliosis including less invasive thoracoscopic surgery, complex spine reshaping (osteotomies), and growth- and motion-sparing surgery including the VEPTR and vertebral body stapling techniques. Clinical studies to improve patient satisfaction and outcomes are ongoing and include research into reducing surgical blood loss, minimizing the effect of early surgery on height and lung development, and reducing pain after scoliosis surgery.
Center for Cerebral Palsy
Our nationally recognized multidisciplinary team includes specialists in physiatry, neurology, psychology, neurosurgery, physical therapy, orthotics, and nutrition with extensive experience in treating children and adults with cerebral palsy. Innovative treatment is available and research is ongoing in gait training with robotic assistance. There is also a highly productive Gait and Motion Analysis Laboratory supported by numerous research and training grants.
Comprehensive Hip Care Program
Whether the patient is a newborn or young adult, our physician team provides care for hip disorders utilizing the latest techniques. Complex femoral and pelvic osteotomies are performed routinely to address a variety of conditions including hip dysplasia, Perthes' disease, slipped capital femoral epiphysis, and femoral-acetabular impingement.
Foot and Ankle Program
Headed by Dr. Lewis Zionts, the pediatric foot and ankle program is one of the few programs on the west coast recognized as a qualified provider of the Ponseti minimally-invasive method of clubfoot treatment. The team includes therapists, orthotist and cast technicians. Studies to improve outcomes through the use of synthetic casting materials and novel braces are underway. Bone and Soft-tissue Tumor Program
Exceptional care is available for children with bone and soft-tissue tumors through the combined expertise and resources of UCLA and Orthopaedic Hospital. Led by Dr. Jeffrey Eckardt, UCLA's orthopaedic oncology program has been a pioneer in the development of limb-sparing surgical strategies. Established in 1962, Orthopaedic Hospital's oncology program was one of the first of its kind in the Western United States offering a multidisciplinary team approach with special expertise in tumors affecting infants, children and young adults.
Spina Bifida Program
Our multidisciplinary Spina Bifida Clinic is a CCS-recognized treatment center and includes a pediatric orthopaedist, pediatric neurologist, pediatric urologist, pediatrician, physical and occupational therapists, pediatric nurse specialist, social worker, dietician and orthotist specializing in congenital disorders. Consultations are also available with audiologists, speech pathologists, nutritionists and genetic counselors. (http://www.orthohospital.org/medical_spinabifida.php)
Hemophilia
For over 35 years, the Hemophilia Treatment Center at Orthopaedic Hospital has pioneered the concept of providing a comprehensive, multidisciplinary team approach to the management of children and adults with bleeding disorders. In 1970, the Center was designated as an International Hemophilia Training Center by the World Federation of Hemophilia, one of the first four in the world. We are the largest adult (ages 14 +) hemophilia treatment center in Southern California. (http://www.orthohospital.org/medical_hemophilia.php)
