Bleeding and Clotting Disorders
For over 35 years, the Hemophilia Treatment Center at Orthopaedic Hospital has pioneered the concept of providing a comprehensive, multidisciplinary team approach to the management of children and adults with bleeding disorders. In 1970, the Center was designated by the World Federation of Hemophilia an International Hemophilia Training Center, one of the first four in the world.
Goal and Objective
The goal of the Hemophilia Treatment Center is to provide comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for persons with congenital bleeding disorders and for the complications of those disorders, including full care for HIV patients. The treatment philosophy brings together hematologists, orthopaedic surgeons, physical therapists, social workers, and nurses, to support patients and their families. Adults and adolescents who have acquired blood-borne infections, including chronic hepatitis and HIV, through prior treatment with blood products, are also treated at the Center.
The objective of the Center is the diagnosis and optimal management of bleeding disorders and their complications. Disorders treated include hemophilia A and B, von Willebrand's disease, and other inborn deficiencies of plasma clotting factors and platelets.
The staff at the Hemophilia Treatment Center understand that hemophilia is a serious, chronic, life-long disorder, and patients need more than purely medical management. Bleeding can happen at any time, disrupting school or work, may cause prolonged periods of pain and disability and decrease quality of life. The Center provides help through social workers and counselors who assist adults to live independently and work with parents to help their children develop self-esteem and manage their disorder.
